June 6-10

Transitional Kindergarten

 

Chinese: In Chinese class this week we learned the lessons,  大雨和小雨 and 好孩子. We wrote the words 雨 and 子. By this time of the year, we were very good at following the stroke orders.  Our writing has improved and looks very nice. More importantly, we remembered words that we have learned in the class. We also sing and dance along Tang poems:詠鵝

and 春曉.

 

In Chinese Culture class, we made 3D flowers. From the activity, we learned to say different colors of flowers as well as write the word 花flower in Mandarin. In addition, we also did paper folding. This time we fold a crane. We discussed about the colors and the body parts of the bird. It was fun to do the art activities.

 

In Math, we continued to make progress in addition and subtraction while a few of us began to learn number system in Mandarin.

 

English: This week in English, the class read the story, “Country Sounds, Town Sounds”. Through this reading, the students practice –es, ou, and short vowel “a” words. Students learned that some plural words requires adding –es at the end of the word. By adding –es to verbs show that the verb is taking action now. Words that they have learned and reviewed are – rang, car, ran, buses, round, sound, about, found, house and out.  The class also practiced the –at family words and danced to the –at family word song.

In art, students made sea animal sun catcher. They used watercolor paint on coffee filter paper and let it dry. Then they glued on a black cut out of the sea animal for their finishing touch. Students were happy to take home this artwork to hang it on their windows! The next art projects we work on were fingerprint dandelions flower. Students explore using white paint and the feeling of paint on their fingers. The students tried to keep their fingerprint in a circular motion to create a circle full of fingerprints.

 

In Science this week, students learned what scientists do. They learn that scientist work hard and have to follow various steps. These steps are what we call the scientific method. Students were able to receive their own scientist and what their tasks were. They were able to color and decorate their scientist. Further, we learned about the butterfly lifecycle and incorporate how scientist would observe butterflies by jotting down notes about their observations. 

Kindergarten

 

Chinese: Yhis week in Chinese class, we wrapped up lesson 15, What is a Friend? 什麼是朋友?and moved on to lesson 16, My Friend and I我和我的朋友. We learned to introduced ourselves to the class in Mandarin. As always, we continued to practice vocabulary for T3 assessment. In calligraphy class, we wrote 腳走正路 which means walking the right path.

 

First Grade

 

Chinese: This week in Chinese class, we learned to make phrases for the words: 新,年,春,雞,知,道,外,再,冬,告. We focused our effort on practicing vocabulary for upcoming assessment. We hope to do well in the test!

 

Second Grade

 

Chinese: In Chinese class this week, we read the last story from our textbook, 大家都愛吃飯. The story is about a little boy, Zhong-Zhong and his classmates bringing their favoriate dishes to share at school. They brought a variety of dishes including French sausage fried rice, Mexican burritos, Korean kimchi fried rice, sushi, Indian golden curry rice...etc. From reading the story, students gained reading fluency and became familiar with key vocuabulary.

 

Third/Fourth Grade

 

Chinese: We read the story 西遊記之三:大鬧天宮. We discussed about the personality of the Monkey King and the the major events in the story. From reading the story we did not only learn about the story of Monkey king but also the reading fluency and pronunciation. We also did exercises by making phrases and sentences for each unfamiliar words. Lastly we practiced using them in clozed paragraphs. 

 

May 30-June 3

English: This week in English, students read the story called, “Under the Big Blue Sea”. Through this story, the class practiced the -tion phonetic concepts. They also reviewed and practice words with -ue. Words they learned through this story are action, motion, and blue. Others words that they have learned are action, direction, clue, and Sue. The students practice writing sentences by capitalizing the first letter in the beginning of the sentence and putting a period at the end of the sentence.

In art this week, students worked on creating their own “Goldfish in a Bag”. Every goldfish was different in color and size. Students were able to use watercolor painting for this art work and will continue to explore watercolor painting next week.

This week in Science, students learned about germs and why we need to use soap. The class did a germ simulation experiment using water, pepper and dish soap. The pepper represents the germs. Students were able to cover their finger in soap and dip it into the water with pepper. What happen was the soap repel the pepper (germs). The class also learned about surface tension through this experiment.They learned when soap is put into water, it lowers the water molecules. The water molecules begin to scatter where the soap was put.

Kindergarten

Chinese: In Chinese class this week, we continued to review vocabulary for Wednesday assessment. We also practiced for science and social studies test. In addition, on Thursday and Friday, we learned new words and phrases for lesson 10. These words include 服務, 成功,勇敢,偉大,教育家, 影響,領袖,英雄,發明家 and 行為。

 

Third/Fourth Grade

 

Chinese: Although it was a short week this week, we did many things in our Chinese class. First, we put effort in preparing for vocabulary test for the upcoming assessment at the school. Then we did exericses by writing characters with the same radicals. We also combined words to make new phrases. Lastly, we reviewed the words and phrases we learned from previous weeks!
