11/17-21

Kindergarten: In Mandarin this week, we reviewed previous lessons for fluency and applying them in our daily conversation. We focused on the characters: 森林, 百,千,生, 長,花  草,數. In Tang Shi class, we sang 鳥鳴澗.

The poem was written by 王維. It depicts the serenity of the valley that you can hear the leaves falling down one by one.  The sudden rise of the moon wakes up the birds and causes them to chirp disrupting the peaceful scenery. We were very at singing and dancing to the poem!

 

For English this week, we began talking a little bit about Christmas and what makes certain holidays feel exactly like them. For example, what makes Thanksgiving and Christmas different or similar? We also worked on identifying pictures with words and associating them with the correct spelling.

 

First Grade: In Chinese this week, we talked about Thanksgiving/感恩節的由來 and the food they like to eat on Thanksgiving. We learned  characters related to Thanksgiving including 火雞, 印第安人, 玉米, 感恩節. We also discussed the story ,"請開門"  and the vocabulary,過來, 快, 走開, 送信.

 

 

For English this week, we did review on our chapters to fix our mistakes and practice our reading skills. We also slowly began brainstorming ideas for an upcoming Christmas story essay.

 

Second Grade: We read a story about the Monkey King an how he got his golden rod 金箍棒. It was a fun story! We then practice writing the characters: 洋, 世界, 原來. Lastly, we each made a Thanksgiving cards for our family.

 

For English this week, we focused on a certain topic on how to write and organize a better essay. We started off with brainstorming ideas out loud as a class and then worked on a spider diagram that helps organize what we want to write in our story and more importantly the details that we need to add to make our essays more appealing.

 

Third grade: In Chinese, we learned new words such as 細菌,馬虎,錯字, 回答,答案,and 改變。We found out that a person who is 馬馬虎虎 is someone who is careless. 

 

In English, we wrote journals on Thanksgiving. Some of us chose to write about our favorite Thanksgiving and some of us wrote about what Thanksgiing food we would most want to learn how to cook. Our most creative journal was about how a turkey tried to disguise himself so he wouldn't be eaten.

 

Fourth Grade: In Chinese, we learned new words such as 教室,古詩, 時鐘,背後,and 詩人. We learned about the famous Chinese poet 李白 and read some of his famous poems such as 靜夜思。

 

In English, we wrote journals on Thanksgiving. Some of us were really creative and came up with stories such as "Turkeyzilla". 

 

11/10-14

Kindergarten: It was a short week this week. Many of us took Monday and Tuesday off. In Chinese class this week, we reviewed the previous lesson "森林大火"  and  practiced writing characters: 山, 火, 土, 木. We loved to dance to the song "Oh! My baby." 

 

 

For English this week, we worked on short "E" words and read a story called A Buggy Race. The story is about bugs who race to the finish line while describing what they pass by along the way. We also talked more about thanksgiving, what we are thankful for, and made hand turkeys to hang along the wall.

 

First Grade:  In Chinese class this week, we continued with the lesson "叔叔的謎語/Uncle's riddle." Here are the clues: when young, it crawled, when it grew up, it has two legs, and when old, it had three legs. What is it?  In this lesson, we learned to write and talk about誰,每,問,猜,前.

 

For English this week, due to a shorter week, we worked on reviewing our previous vocabulary words and their synonym/antonym forms. We also read a story about sled dogs, which described what they were and how they were taken care of.

Second Grade: In Chinese class this week,  we made flashcards for the key words including 鯊魚. 海豚, 鯨魚, 螃蟹,海草,珊瑚, etc. We also practiced writing the characters, 具, 動, 物. For the fun part, we learned to sing 捕魚歌.

Third Grade:  In Mandarin, we learned to use the different words that contain 園,such as 公園,校園,動物園,and 花園。Then we used words and phrases to make a sentences. Some of the words we used are 面具, 房間, 可怕, and 內容.

 

In English, we read a magazine article Chemistry In Action. We also learned the synonyms for the words baggage, eternal, establish, and worthy. Then we practiced using the new words we learned in sentences. Some of our favorite words are haste, humid, antique, and sensible.

 

Fourth Grade:  In Mandarin, we practiced putting words such as 笑話,生日會, and 參加 in order to make a complete sentence. Then we  learned to choose between words that look similar such as 力 and 加, 恩 and 因。

 

In English, we read a diary entry called Wagon Train Diary. Then we tried to figure out the analogies of certain words such as associate, luxurious, and hazy.

 

 

 

Art Enrichment: It's the season of harvest. We looked at pictures of Chinese rice terraces 稻田. We examined different types of Chinese terraces, and learned that the Chinese rice terraces were usually filled with water, and because of that, they were converted to be stair-like 梯田。They were called 水稻梯田. We painted different colors on the terraces. We used different shades of green to create green fields and trees; and proportioned the objects to make it spacious. We had fun creating our own Chinese rice terraces.

11/3-8

Kindergarten: In Chinese class this week, we started the new lesson "森林大火" It is about the forest on fire and burn down animals' home. The animals work together planting the trees to make their new home. We learned to write the characters 火, 森林, 土, etc. We learned the new dance routine, "Oh! My baby."  Our kindergartners were so cute when dancing to the song!

 

 

For English this week, we talked about thanksgiving and what makes thanksgiving so unique. In addition, we tried spelling out some new words such as November and Turkey. We also worked on short "e" words and associating them with proper pictures.

 

First Grade: In Chinese class this week, we continued with the lesson "猜猜看." Then we talked about our 社區/community to review what we have learned in our day school. We also practiced writing sentences and the characters related to the topic, 社區/community.

 

For English this week, we wrote a story about how could we save Thanksgiving if there were no more turkeys in the world. We also did review on our past vocabulary words and practiced our reading

Second Grade: In Chinese class this week, we began Lesson 4, 海洋裡的世界. We discussed and shared our experience about the what we saw in the 海洋公園/Ocean Park. We learned to sing a well known song魚兒水中游. We loved it!

 

For English, this week, we talked about Thanksgiving, where it originated from, and we enjoy it. We also reviewed our vocabulary books and worked on sentence structure and grammer

 

Third grade: In Mandarin we read the story "我不姓王" and learned about the phrase 馬馬虎虎. We also learned how to say big numbers in Chinese using the place values, 個 十百千 萬.

 

In English, we learned about proverbs. Some we have heard before and some are new to us. Our favorite ones are "Look before you leap", "Many hands make light work", "Don't cry over spilled milk", and "Better late than never".

 

Fourth Grade: In Mandarin we learned new words such as 萬一, 校園, 校園內, 內容, 動物園. Like the 3rd graders, we also learned how to say big numbers in Chinese using the place values, 個 十百千 萬.

 

In English, we learned about the synonyms for word such as glamour, overwhelm, mishap, deceive, and emigrate.
