Kindergarten: In Chinese class this week, we learned the phrase "不給糖就搗蛋/Trick or Treat“ for the Halloween. We also read the story about what you have in your house. We loved to talk about what's in the refrigerator, on the table, etc. Lastly, we practiced writing charactersL 生,日,卡,早.

 

For English this week, we talked about Halloween and safety tips on how to have a happy and safe Halloween. We also worked on short "E" words and read a new story called Ted's Room, which is about a bug who has a messy room, with all things red, and all things hidden under his bed.

萬聖節

First Grade: In Chinese class this week, we  continued with our lesson "友友的午飯". It is about YouYou forgot to bring his lunch but all his friend shared food with  In addition we read “猜猜看” a story about a riddle. We also practiced writing characters like 萬聖節, 不給糖就搗蛋 and the characters we learned.

 

For English this week, we talked about Halloween, and what makes Halloween so spooky and unique. Many students agreed that it had to do with, costumes, decorations, and more importantly getting candies from houses. We also did review on our vocabulary words, and worked on sentence structure.

 

Second Grade In Chinese class this week, we learned the measure words:窩, 輛, 艘. We practiced using flashcards and making sentences for the key vocabulary from previous lessons. For Halloween, we made Halloween masks and scribled and scrabbled on trick or treat bags.

 

For English this week, we talked about Halloween, why we like or dislike it, and if we could change one thing about it what would it be? We worked on our vocabulary activities, using new words and creating new sentences to practice our handwriting and sentence structure.

Third/Fourth Grade: In Chinese, we had a lot of fun transforming our classroom door into Frankenstein. It took a lot of planning and designing, but the hard work paid off and we love the look of our new door!

 

In English, our journal topic for this week was Halloween. We chose to write about many aspects of this events. Some of us chose to give the most important tips on Halloween for our younger brother or sister, some chose to write about what they are going to dress up as, and some of us chose to create a spooky story. After we finalized our journal, we put it up on the wall with some decorations.

 

 

In enrichment, we used our imaginations to illustrate 萬聖節 Halloween-themed items, 南瓜、樹、貓頭鷹、月亮, and moonlight shine through to create this fantastic scene.  We learned to blend similar shades of colors, and layer different colors.  不給糖,就搗蛋!Halloween is something we feel excited about around this time of the year. 

10/20- 10/24

This week Genius kids celebrated Chinese festivals with arts, food and songs. We started the week with drawing of Chinese temple & lanterns and making Nian Gao &Yuan Xiao to celebrate Chinese New Year. We also made dumplings and mooncakes to celebrate Moon Festival. Best of all, we learned to sing the famous song, 明月 Bright Moon to wish the best for everyone!

Kindergarten: In Chinese class this week, we learned a new song about fruits. It is amazing that students remembered the fruit names we learned from previous lessons. We also practiced writing some characters that we've learned including 月亮/Noon, 山洞/Cave...etc.

 

For English this week, we wrote new stories to practice our penmanship and played word trivia using new words that we learned. We also worked on improving our sentence structures.

First Grade: In Chinese class this week, we discussed the activities we did in the morning and shared what we liked about the activities. We talked about 萬聖節/Halloween: what we want to be on Halloween. We learned the phrase "不給糖就搗蛋/Trick or Treat. “  We also practiced writing sentences, "要...也要..../I want.... and want...." and  characters we have learned.

 

For English we wrote a new story, where the class had to create an imaginary adventure consisting of three friends using the who, what, when, where, and why format. We also worked on sentence structure by using more words and participating more in class.

Second Grade: In Chinese class this week, we read a story about Irish Halloween custom of pumpkin carving. We learned using simile to compare two different things. For examples, He is smart like a monkey. 他聰明得像一隻猴子, He is gentle like a sheep.他溫柔得像一隻綿羊. Simile adds a variety to our sentence structures making our writing more interesting!

 

For English we worked on reviewing our previous chapter words and practicing their synonym and antonym forms. We also talked and wrote a halloween story about a group a friends who went a very spooky adventure. 

Third Grade: in Mandarin we learned about the Chinese names of different holidays such as 萬聖節,春節,感恩節,中秋節. We also learned to distinguish between words that look similar but have different meanings such as 力,加,恩,因. 

 

In English, we practiced using words from unit 4 in sentences to improve our understanding of their meanings. We chose to use the words extend, contribute, ambush, dread, frantic, initial, and employ.

10/13-10/17

Eistein Week: This week our genius children were super busy working on building balloon rockets, mixing bubble monsters, ooableck and  figuring out what make something sink and/or float. We also looked into Chinese inventions: abacus, name seal, calligraphy, kites and noodle. We all voted noodle is the best activity because we got to make it and then eat it!

 

 

Kindergarten:  In Chinese class this week, we learned about 騙子/liar from the story name "國王的新衣/King's New Clothes." We really enjoyed our story time. We also practiced writing some characters that we've learned like 門/door, 左/left, 右/right...etc.

 

For English, this week we worked on our penmanship skills and alphabet association with words. We worked on a few writing activities, including a short spooky Halloween story, written out in the shape of a pumpkin or ghost. For the alphabet we worked on expanding our vocabulary even more by learning new words that start with A, D, C, F, and etc.

First Grade: In Chinese class this week, we discussed the activities we did in the morning and shared what we like about the activities. We reviewed the lessons we've learn. We could read all the lesson stories! We also practiced writing sentences like 我今天....?/what did I do today? And some character we have learn.

 

Instead of English class, first graders focused on Math this week to catch up with last week when teacher Dennis got sick. We sharpened our skills in addition and subtraction. We also worked on math problems that includes estimation, patterns, and finding missing addends.

Second Grade:  We reviewed words related to Halloween. These words are 蝙蝠 蜘蛛 掃帚 糖果. etc. For extension, we discussed about recycling and sorted pictures into recycle, compost, and trash categories. We made pencil holders from recycle materials to show that we can recycle things around us!

 

For English, we did some review on previous chapters by studying their synonym and antonym forms, and writing complete sentences using the vocabulary words properly. We also wrote some spooky stories about halloween, like a black cat that turns into a giant vampire cat only on halloween  and a story about a pumpkin from Hawaii that comes to life only on halloween to steal candy from the trick or treater

Third Grade:  In Mandarin we practiced reviewed previously learned words and practiced writing them neatly. We focused on 萬聖節 because Halloween is coming up. Other words we focused on are 感恩,參加,歡迎,參觀,遊行,遊戲,and 卡通。

 

In English, we practiced using words from unit 3 in sentences to improve our understanding of their meanings. We chose to use the words response, dependable, qualify, previous, burden, and urgent.

10/6-10/10

Chinese Cultural Week: This week was our first week of the fall camp for the year round school students. The theme for this week was Chinese cultural week. We did lots of painting, cooking, and playing Chinese games while at the same time we kept up with our work in Math, Chinese, and English. Come join us!

Kindergarten:  In Mandarin class this week, we continued to practice the lesson, 晚上 At Night. We can read it fluently now! From the lesson, we learned some descriptive words such as, 方方的/Square 彎彎的/Curve and to describe square house, square boxes, curve road and so on. Then we practiced writing characters from the story of the "At Night" such as 圓/Round, 尖/Sharp, and 林/Forest.

 

For English this week, we reviewed our alphabets and expanded our vocabulary by coming up with new words for each letter of the alphabet for example, E for Eskimo, G for Gorilla, and M for Mice. We also worked on our penmanship by continually writing in our journals using our favorite books. Lastly, we read a Halloween story called, The Great Big Surprise, which is about a town full of mice getting ready for Halloween by cleaning the town and collecting the pumpkins that they have been growing all year long, and lastly with the reveal of their biggest pumpkin ever grown.

First Grade: In Mandarin class this week, we continued with the lesson, 開玩笑 Joking. We were better at reading the story! We also talked about 寵物/Pets. Some of children would like to have pet 龍/Dragon. It was fun to talk about all type of pets. Then we practiced writing characters such as 還,包,真,個.

 

For English this week, we talked about ways to improve our stories, for example using more creative words to describe what's going on and to more importantly practice our penmanship. We wrote two stories, the first one was a free write about anything we ever wanted, and the second to get us into the Halloween spirit was to write about a scary spooky halloween story.

 

Second Grade:  In Mandarin class this week, we read 南瓜燈籠  which is about a lantern made out of a pumpkin. The story is about the pumkin seeds from the pumpkins left from the Halloween decoration were covered under snow, germinated in spring and grew into pumpkins right around fall season. From the lesson, we learned words such as 掃, 具, 巫 , 紙, 糖, 果 to discuss about Halloween. We practiced writing and orally construct phrases and sentences for these characters.  We then made a pumpkin using paper plate and lots of creativity. It was fun!

 

For English this week, we talked about ways to improve our stories, for example using more creative words to describe what's going on and to more importantly practice our penmanship. We wrote two stories, the first one was a free write about anything we ever wanted, and the second to get us into the Halloween spirit was to write about a scary spooky halloween story.

Third Grade: in Mandarin we learned the words 參加,參觀, 喜歡,歡迎,and 感恩節。 We talked about what we liked (喜歡) to do, what we liked to eat, and what we like to read.

 

In English, we practiced using words we learned in sentences. Some words we picked are thaw, previous, response, dependable, and qualify.

 

Fourth Grade: In Mandarin class, we practiced answering questions about whether we are near sighted (近視眼), our favorite TV show (電視節目),and who we like to have a chat (談天) with. We also learned to combine sentences with 故意...因為 to talk about why people do certain things on purpose.

 

In English, we read about the "Flight of the Monarch" from a magazine article. It was about the journey of a  Monarch butterfly. We learned new words like treacherous and cautious from the story.

Kindergarten: In Mandarin class this week, we learned to use descriptive words such as. 尖尖的/Sharp and 圓圓的/Round to describe sharp teeth, sharp pencils, round moon and so on.  On Friday, we moved to a new lesson, 晚上 At Night. We practiced writing characters from the story of the "Big Mountain" such as 火/Fire, 水/Water, and 山/Mountain.

 

In Tang Shi class, we learned a new poem, 送別 To Bid Farewell written by 王維. The poem describes the parting under the setting of the sun and longing for the friend to come back when the grass is green again. This poem is one the most famous poems known by all students in Taiwan and perhaps in China.

 

For English this week, we read a new story called A Snug Bug. The story is about a bug who's looking for something to snuggle in, but ends up finding a rug to keep him happy and warm. This story also focuses on our topic this week of short "U" words such as, bug, snug, rug, hug, and bud. We also continued practicing associating letters with their sounds and our handwriting through writing stories in our journals.

 

9/29-10/3

First Grade: In Mandarin class this week, we started a new lesson, 開玩笑/Joking. It is about the joke 中中 made with his dad during lunch. Before we read the story, we previewed the characters and learned the new words, 害怕/afraid and 可怕/fear. We also reviewed the family tree and the titles for each members in our family. We became better and not confused with 姑姑/阿姨, 爺爺/外公, etc.  

 

For English this week, we did a review on all of our previous chapters. We practiced many of our previous vocabulary words such as, seashell, travel, frown, leader, and search. The class also came up with new sentences for the words to practice how to use them properly in a sentence. In addition, we also practiced our reading through short stories such as, The Fluffy Tail Bear and an article about Martin Luther King, Jr.

Second Grade: in Mandarin class this week, we practiced writing the characters such as 東 , 西, 瓜, 南, 直, 現, 空 and applied them in phrases and in sentences. We practiced writing characters by looking at pictures and did dictation test on these characters.. In addition, we played bingo games and write about a holiday experience on our journals.

 

For English this week, we worked on our new chapter which contained new words such as, ancient, climate, custom, and decay. We also read a new story about the history of the Liberty Bell, in which students got to practice writing the story out to practice their penmen ship. In addition, the class worked on a sentence activity that helped focus on using the vocabulary words properly in a sentence.

 

 

 

Third Grade: in Mandarin we read the story 感恩節說笑話比賽。 We really enjoyed hearing the jokes about why turkey's (火雞) favorite country is Turkey (土耳其)。

 

In English, we practiced using context clues to describe the meaning of a particular word such as drowsy, stampede, supplies, baffled, and enchanted. We also learned to look at context clues to figure out meaning of words that we did not learn yet.

 

Fourth Grade: In Mandarin class, we learned to use the phrase 一整天 to describe what someone is doing instead of saying 從早到晚. We also learned to talk about accidentally (不小心) vs on purpose (故意)。 Other  important words we learned are 報告,報名,低下,and 報紙。

 

In English, We figured out the meaning of new words by looking at specific words that describes the new words. Then we practiced adding context clues to words we already knew so that other readers can figure out the meanings easily.

Enrichment:

 

Art: This week we did Chinese calligraphy and brush painting. We wrote Tang poetry 登鸛雀樓  and we painted Chinese orchids. It was a treat to get to both calligrahy and brush painting this week!

 

Chess: This week we continued to practice moving the chess pieces. We became better at moving the pieces. The best part was that we learned to become patience!

 

Abacus:  We continued to practice with our hand movements. Although we were pretty slow, we improved in moving the correct fingers for the lower and upper beads. This week we added both the upper lower beads.
