December 15-19

Transitional Kindergarten: In Mandarin class this week, Tina laoshi taught us to make mini book that had the words we learned for the past weeks. We also leaned to sing 媽媽,媽媽, 我在哪裡? We loved to sing and read in the class!

Kindergarten: In Mandarin class this week, we read the rhymes, 下雨了 and 大風和大雨. These rhymes were perfect for the weather we had this week.  We learned the phrases: 白雲, 烏雲, 雨傘, 雨衣, 每天, 天氣, 早上.早安.雪地. 下雪. 星期, 地球, 地上, 草地,草莓.  We applied these phrases to describe our weather.

 

In Tang Shi class, we learned to sing 池上. The poem depicts a scenery where kids rowing a boat to steal the lotus in the pond. They thought that no one would notice them. However when seeing the water parted when the row across the pond, everyone would know someone is coming to pick the lotus. Although the poem has only 20 words, it tells us a very descriptive and complete story.

 

For English this week, we got to make gingerbread houses, Christmas trees, and wrote a short story about our ginger bread house. We also worked on a rhyming words worksheet such as jay, play, May, and tray.

 

First Grade:  In Chinese this week, we talked about 聖誕節. We were all excited about the holiday. We also started with the lesson six, "小河的歌" and Tang Shi “登鸛雀樓.” We learned some new characters like "和, 什, 麼, 歌, 流, 海." Lastly we practiced writing characters, 還, 包, 奶, 真, 個 ect.

 

For English this week, we got to make gingerbread houses and write a story about it. For example, in one gingerbread house there were 10 different rooms, some of those rooms were a homework room, play room, swimming room, and a zombie room. Students got to use their imagination and express through writing what their gingerbread house consisted of.

 

 

 

Second Grade: In Mandarin class this week, we talked about our favorite holidays and we agreed that we love Christmas the most. The main reason is because we got lots present and the best is we were off from school! We became really good at using Mandarin to express our thought!

 

For English this week, students got to make gingerbread houses and practiced talking about it using describing words, such as the house was made with seven pieces of graham crackers, using orange frosting, it had a red circle window made or red vines and etc.

 

 

Third grade: In Chinese, we learned the difference between 其他,其中,其實 and 對面著,對看著,對照著。

 

In English, we read a magazine article called "Let's Be Healthy!" and learned new words such as epidemic, disaster, feeble, and accurate. We also worked on identifying the synonyms for plague, covets, catastrophes, and introductory. 

 

 

Fourth Grade: In Chinese, we learned about a new poem 白日依山盡,黃河入海流,欲窮千里目,更上一層樓。Then we tried to interpret the poem's meaning and drew a picture of our own interpretations. 

 

In English, we worked on analogies of new words we learned such as "strawberry is to fruit as carrot is to vegetable", "linger is to rush as luxurious is to plain". Some new words we learned are overwhelming, emigrate, glamour, and span. 

December 8-12

Kindergarten: In Mandarin class this week, we were super busy reading and writing. We read the story 晚上At Night,  媽媽的生日 Mommy's Birthday, and 下雨了It's Raining. We learned the characters 山洞, 火山, 樹林, 木瓜, 月亮, 月餅,

卡車, 卡片..etc. Santa...we were very good in Mandarin class.

 

In Tang Shi class, we learned to sing 柳絮. The poem paints a picture of raining and the birds are jumping up and down. This was the perfect poem to sing during the biggest storm pouring last week.

 

For English this week, we got to finish writing, coloring, and drawing our Santa stories and hang them on the wall. We also worked on some rhyming words like "cake' rhymes with bake, rake, make, and etc.

First Grade:  In Chinese this week, we continued with the story 中中的門牙 and the vocabularies: 幫忙, 跌倒, 糟糕 etc... We continued to recognize the vocabularies like 醫生, 護士, 警察, 消防隊員, to help us on the upcoming test. Lastly we practiced writing characters, 時候, 拿, 抱, 到 ect...

 

For English this week, we finished our Christmas stories along with illustrating pictures to help give the readers a better sense of whats happening. In addition, we about to publish our Christmas story, "How the Grinch stole Christmas. " Stay tuned!

Second Grade In Mandarin class this week, we read a story 蠶絲的故事. From the story we learned that Chinese invented the silk. We learned to use measure words, 朵 and  把. We also have a dictation quiz and we did pretty well.

 

For English this week, we completed our Christmas related stories and are now in the process of editing, rewriting and publish them on a different sheet of paper. In addition we made a title page, a detailed character page, and picture of where the story takes place. Can't wait to show you!

Third grade: In Chinese, we memorized the poem 靜夜思 by 李白 and practiced writing it.

 

In English, we read a magazine article called "Let's Be Healthy!" We also practiced using new words in sentences, such as ancestor, penetrate, eternal, feeble, survive, and epidemic.

 

Fourth Grade: In Chinese, we also spent time memorizing the poem  靜夜思 by 李白‘. Then we practiced writing the poem. 

 

In English, we wrote our journals on Christmas. Some of us chose to talk about our favorite Christmas day from the past and some of us chose to come up with a Christmas story. 

 

December 1-5

Kindergarten: In Mandarin class this week, we read the article, Flowers on the Mountain. From the article, we learned to tell directions as well antonyms, 左邊, 右邊. 中間, 上面, 下面, 左手,右手.  At the same time, we also learned to write 左, 右, 中, 尖, 多, 少.

 

In Tang Shi class, we learned to sing 鹿柴 written by Tang poet 王維. With 20 words in the poem, the poet depicts a scenery of deep and empty mountain with reflected sunlight shining on luscious, green moss. Our kinders have been learning over 12 poems!

 

For English this week, we worked on our Christmas letter to Santa. Students had to think about what they wanted for Christmas and what good things they did to let Santa know that they deserved it. This assignment focused on practicing spelling out words and sentence flow. After students were done writing their letters, they published and pasted their writing onto their makeshift Santa.

First Grade: In Chinese this week, we first reviewed the story 請開門 and the vocabularies:過生日, 圖書館, 快點, 水果, 開車, and 信封. Then we went over the topic 社區/ community to helped us prepare for the  upcoming test. Lastly, we started the new story, "中中的門牙." It is about Zhong Zhong's front teeth and tooth fairies 牙仙子. Lastly we practiced writing characters, 地方, 住, 房, 喜歡 ect...

 

For English this week, the students worked on their own Christmas stories. Students first worked on brainstorming ideas focusing on who, what, when, why, and where of their story to help them organize their thought and enrich their writing. We all look forward to publish our writing next week.

Second Grade: In Chinese this week, we began lesson 5, 送給外婆一條絲巾. We were excited to share our experiences of giving and receiving gifts from our friends and families. We practiced writing characters such as 台, 北, 國, 電, 片, 衣, 記.

 

For English this week, students worked on a writing technique called the spider diagram or growing tree. Students listed what their story was about, then branched out with details. The diagram helped us to create a more organized and descriptive story. We will continue to work on our story next week.

Third Grade:  In Chinese, we read the story 古詩二首 and learned about the poems 靜夜思 by 李白 and 尋隱者不遇 by 賈島. We first looked at the pictures to help understand the meanings of the poems. 

 

In English we read about the world's largest flower, the rafflesia. We learned that it grows in humid rain forests and that it smells like rotting meat, that's why it's also called the "meat flower". We also reviewed our previous words by using them in sentences, such as the words pledge, dependable, policy, and routine. 

 

 

 

Fourth Grade: In Chinese, we read the story 有獎!有獎!We learned about the stories behind 李白‘s poem 靜夜思 and the reason why he misses home in the poem.

 

In English, we read about the ancient myth Baucis and Philemon. From the passage, we learned the words persecute, blemish, nomads, conclude, and festive.
